About me
My name is Nathaniel Edward Spidgewood, formerly known as Nathaniel Edward Speed. I changed my last name on November 24, 2008. A teenage guy, I dreamed of being a famous artist and filmmaker. I was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Federal Way, in June 22, 1995. I started drawing when I was five years old. For years, I drew Nate & Friends Kids comics, drew comic books (e.g. The Stupid Chito and George the Bunny), made three webcomics, and worked on M.U.G.E.N.
The first comic strip I've ever heard of was Peanuts by Charles Schulz when I was three years old. I later watch the animated TV cartoons based on this comic. I read some other comics too, like Calvin and Hobbes (I first read it at age seven), Bloom County, Dilbert, Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine.
When I was in third grade, I first read this comic strip called Buckles, written and illustrated by David Gilbert. I became a fan of that strip until May 2009. Buckles is an okay comic strip now, it's not as good as it used to be, and it's not as good as Calvin and Hobbes, either. It also doesn't have any jokes; all it has is dog commands. Also, I wasn't too enthusiastic about most of the dialogue and crude drawings. But still, the strip is all right.
Another comic strip that used to be awesome but is okay now is Jim Davis' Garfield. I first read that strip when I was eight years old, and months later I became a fan of it. I even disliked Garfield from late 2007 to early 2008, but I started to think that the pre-1988 strips are better than the post-1988 ones. Nowadays I thought Garfield is an okay strip, it's not that great of a strip. It doesn't look very good, and the character development is bad and sometimes ugly. Also, the jokes in today's Garfield aren't funny. Nowadays, the strip is filled with pop culture references. But still, that strip is ok.
On July 2006, I first watched this video-sharing website called YouTube. At the time, I thought it would be awesome to make a video for the site, so on the 31st, I joined it as NES1995. From August to September 2006, the first two videos are in production, and on September 13, they're posted on YouTube. I also draw three webcomics Nate Speed: The Webcomic (about my life), The Little Wolf and the Bad Little Girl (about a spoiled girl named Jane Roberts who hated her adopted wolf), and Muckle (about two friends: a moose-like creature named Muckle and a bird-like creature named Mustard) from 2006 to 2007, although they were drawn on paper and are never scanned to my computer and published online. I also founded a company called Nate Speed, Inc., which has a cartoon division called Nate Speed Cartoons.
I caused a controversy when I made offensive videos for YouTube. These videos and webcomics are supposed to be funny, but they turn out to be pointless and even humorless. My drawings are really childish, my animations are very cheap, my "live-action" videos are very low-quality (because they were filmed on my old webcam instead of a camcorder, which I didn't get until my thirteenth birthday), and my "jokes" involve some well-liked characters getting murdered or bad flatulence sayings, because I was eleven-to-twelve years old. Also, my haters don't know what a webcomic is, so they thought it's something I just invented, even though a webcomic is a comic strip that was published exclusively online. On September 21, 2007, I set my videos to private (and removed them on October 19th), killed off my webcomics, disestablished my company and deleted my first website. I also work for a fighting game engine called M.U.G.E.N from April to December 2007. I was a M.U.G.E.N failure at the time, so in early 2008, it's time for me to move to something new.
From January to June 2008, I used profanity, but I don't use it for a while since I attempted to become a newspaper cartoonist. In March 2008, I changed my drawing style, which was later based on "Buckles". May 2008 isn't very good at the beginning, especially the Internet access ban on May 11th because I used profanity, and the next day I was suspended from school. Meanwhile, I was banned from watching adult shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, etc. by my Project Inspire teacher. After I come back from the ban, the rest of the month went very good, and I became a feature animation fan.
From July to November 2008, I wrote and illustrated the original version of this comic strip called Tara and John about a first grader named Tara Joy Sullivan and her python named John. The strip is based on the Scribbles & Secrets journal's section called Scribble WHAT?. Tara and John was first created as my attempt to get syndicated to newspapers, even though I'm still too young, and that the drawings appear to be poor and cheesy. I first joined deviantART on November 2008 and, by request, I posted the old strips on that website. I caused a controversy after the six-day computer ban in February 2009 due to the fact that the comic appears to be poorly drawn, so I lost all my popularity and stuff. I even got mocked on those YouTube Poop websites such as the YouTube Poop Forums, even though my YouTube channel isn't meant to be for YouTube Poopers; it's meant to be for my fans and friends only, along with cartoon fans.
In March 2009, I got back to the roots of animated cartoons for YouTube, beginning with two hand-drawn animation videos Nate's Walk Cycle and Backpack on the Floor. They don't have to be offensive again. On April 2009, I created this animated short called Broom Wars. It's hand-drawn but there's audio. My animations are influenced by Disney animation, as well as non-Disney animated feature films. This cartoon is the best thing in the world.
While "Broom Wars" is very popular on YouTube since its first release, someone named Geoff Cook (known on YouTube as StarC0mmander) becomes interested in the cartoon because the animation in it was done on Toon Boom, and he asked me to use that software to trace over and color the characters because that'll add a lot to the cartoon. And that's why he became my friend.
Due to the controversy over "Tara and John", I'm going to redraw it when I go to college, but that takes forever, so beginning in May 2009, I'm planning to redraw "Tara and John" for the school newspaper in the summer or before school starts. I'm going to redesign the characters in the comic.
The characters who originally appear in "Scribble WHAT?" originally had the "Scribbles & Secrets" look, but in the new comics, they're going to have a "Buckles" look. John was originally a python who verbalizes his thoughts via thought bubbles in the old comics, but I changed him into a talking cobra in the new comics because he caused confusion with Kaa from Disney's animated version of The Jungle Book.
In the old comics, there's an anthropomorphic aardvark, and his name is Archie, but when I was going to redraw the comics, he's changed into an armadillo. He's also renamed to Arry because he caused confusion with the comic book character Archie. Jamie the duck will have a proper look, unlike in the old comics where he has a deformed look.
On May 10, 2009, I finally decided I was really tired of using NES1995 as my YouTube username, so I set out to make a new account called Spidgewood3000. The reason I made it is because my NES1995 account failed at times, and that it still has a bug that allows so many people to write spam, nasty comments, or even those insulting private messages on my profile and videos, so it's time for me to work on a big move. I haven't closed my old account entirely until weeks after the birth of my current channel, when I received one more spam message.
I don't want my new main account to fail like my old account. After all, it remained a channel for logo fans until June 2009, when I changed its focus on logos to the focus on cartoons and my original work only. My alternative channel would focus on logos and other copyrighted stuff.
That month, I'm planning to go back to adult cartoons on TV. I won't become a fan again, but I'm going back to them.
On June 2009, I began drawing new Tara and John comics. They're much better than the old ones. The characters now have a drawing style based on "Buckles" by David Gilbert, and the guidelines are now more straight than the old ones. The drawings are much better this time.
On June 19, 2009, "Tara and John" debuted on deviantART and the first strip is very popular.
This is the best part of my life. I love spending my career as a cartoonist and developing my style based on an okay comic strip.
